Throughout the summer we have been making repairs to this Grade II Listed property; the new owners had formed a list of corrective repair works from the previous custodianship.
These works included:
- Lime Repointing
- Oak Repairs
- Cast Iron Downpipe and Gutter Replacement
Our private clients wished to recreate the porch that had once stood at the front door. Historic photographs gave indication of the framework, The owners had saved most of the original roof tiles for potential reuse (not all were suitable for reuse and a selection had to be sourced).
Our first call was to Gareth at Altham Oak who has provided seasoned Oak for many of our restoration projects. Gareth and his team have an impressive portfolio, crafting natural Oak projects for their clients.
Heritage Property Repairs recreated red Cheshire brickwork plinths with lime mortar prior to the frame installation by Altham Oak. A chamfered 4-post seasoned Oak structure with curved tie beam sat upon the brickwork with an integrated soleplate to each side.
Oak pegs complete the sectional framework. All the oak has been protected from fungal, insect and weathering at the clients request and choice of product.
Initially we over boarded the Oak frame so that from the underside, felt and battens were not visible. Lead soakers were installed prior to the former roof tiles being fixed. This included a welded lead ridge piece for the abutment against the building.
Aesthetically, the front edges of the tiles were trimmed at angles and an Oak soffit was fitted to steps in order to protect the tile and batten details.
Finally, the ridges were bedded with lime mortar and lead stepped flashings were installed.
