Stone is widely utilised in period properties for features as well as masonry. Features can include quoins, corbels, cills and lintels. Over time, stonework may require replacement or indent repairs. For example, due to weathering delamination or damage. One of our key passions is undertaking Masonry repairs due to the skill involved in blending works with the original and existing.
If cement-based products have been applied (Render or pointing) instead of Lime, this can cause any moisture transfer through the Stone rather than the less porous cement. The stonework face may start to degrade and possible chunks would sheer off. At high level this can be particularly dangerous or could affect the structural integrity of the wall.
Another threat to masonry is plant life and weeds. The roots may penetrate through the mortar, loosening the Stonework. We can offer Stone Consolidation to structures affected.
Sampling and investigation are often required to source the appropriate materials. For instance, to match the Stonework, mortar, colour and pointing style.
