We have undertaken historic walled garden projects, which have included replacement and repointing of heritage brickwork. These bricks differ from modern products and should be bedded and repointed in Lime.
Weeds may grow within the existing mortar causing loosened brickwork. As a result, requiring consolidation.
Sampling and investigation are often required to source the appropriate materials and match the pointing.
If cement-based products have been applied (Render or pointing) instead of Lime, this can cause any moisture transfer through the brick rather than the less porous cement. Consequently, the brickwork face may start to degrade. For instance, sections of the brick may fail and fall. As a result, this can affect the structural integrity of the wall.
