Cork Board Insulation

Lime Plastering onto Cork Boards
Posted on March 8, 2025March 10, 2025 by HPR

Our team has started work on a farmhouse in The Forest of Bowland. The room in this part of the project has struggled to maintain a comfortable temperature, with moisture ingress issues also being addressed.

Removing the plasterwork back to the original exterior walls, we started the process of lime ‘dubbing out’. Once the stone walls were levelled we were able to apply the Cork Boards. Lime Plastering over Cork Boards then commenced and once the lime is cured, we will finish with Earthborn Claypaint [External link].

Once 30mm Cork Boards were specified, we couldn’t wait to get started, the materials were procured from Mike Wye [External link]. Cork board insulation offers many benefits without compromising the charm of the property. Used with permission, the Mike Wye webpage states it best:

Cork board insulation is made entirely from natural and renewable cork. Use as part of a system, offering a vapour permeable insulation and excellent acoustic performance.

The low thermal conductivity (λ=0.037 – 0.040 W/m.K) of cork board offers high energy efficiency. Therefore contributing to an environmental and economic saving.  Using 100% natural cork panels on a building ensures maximum thermal and good acoustic insulation whilst also preserving the environment.

Providing natural and sustainable insulation (extracted from the cork-oak tree every 9 years), the cork used in the Cork Board system is a breathable material, free from any chemicals, synthetic resins and carcinogenic materials. This therefore contributes to a natural, healthy environment inside or outside of your home.
