Originally built in 1776, we were invited to undertake insurance works to one of the two oldest hotels in Blackpool. The work involved renewing the front balustrade that had been severely damaged in an accident.
Situated at the northern end of Blackpool’s famous promenade, around the year 1900 this Lancashire hotel was renovated to increase the size, creating the Victorian red brick façade.
While clearing the balustrade rubble from the accident, we discovered that the materials were concrete and not stone. Although we were unable to find a matching style available for sale, we were able to clean and cast moulds from sections that remained undamaged.
Finding the same style was important as the hotel frontage is surrounded by 3 sections of the same historic balustrading. As such, a different style would have been apparent upon the approach to the entrance.
The bases, headers and balustrades were therefore recast by a specialist provider. This was a slow process due to the limit of casts to keep costs competitive with the number of items to recreate.
Our team installed the recreated sections onsite and were advised by the hotel of the finished new paint specification. It is always pleasing to see the finished result from what initially appears to be a straightforward project. We love to experience new and challenging projects!
